Exciting New Junior Lifeguard Program for 2022

Exciting New Junior Lifeguard Program in Gilroy

Team of Lifeguards

We are excited to share the news with everyone that beginning soon there will be a junior lifeguard program offered at  Gilroy. The city of Gilroy California is centrally located at the southern gateway to Silicon Valley and proud to be “A Community with a Spice for Life.” The Jr. Lifeguard program introduces youth to the fun and rewarding job of protecting and saving lives at the pool. There are several perks to joining the junior lifeguard programs. These perks include the following:

1. It teaches responsibility.

  • Junior lifeguards learn all the basics of what it takes to be an awesome lifeguard. It’s a great way for a young, strong swimmer to transition into more advanced aquatics and learn how to help themselves, friends, and family.

2. It prepares them for emergencies.

  •  Life-saving skills are taught, such as CPR, first aid, and AED training

3. It builds self-confidence.

  •   It takes a great deal of confidence (and bravery!) to make the leap to rescue someone who may be in trouble.

4. It keeps them active.

  • Swimming, diving, and treading water are arguably some of the best ways to keep kids fit during the summer.

5. It’s competitive and fosters camaraderie

  •  Sportsmanship, teamwork, and camaraderie are emphasized as junior guards cheer each other on.

6. It’s tons of fun!

Junior Lifeguard Program Introduction

According to the American Red Cross, junior lifeguarding is “designed for kids ages 11-14 and helps to build a foundation of knowledge, attitudes, and skills for future lifeguards.” The goal of the program is to introduce them to lifesaving skills and allow participants to shadow lifeguards in order to gain a real sense of the job.

The course can be offered over multiple days or weeks and can be taught by any experienced lifeguard or Water Safety Instructor. We are planning the schedule to be twice per week, 9 am to 12 pm noon for 3 weeks. In order to qualify for the program all children interested must have reached a Level 5 or Level 6 on the American Red Cross swim-level chart to participate.

Mandatory prerequisites include the following:

  • Swim the front crawl for 25 yards continuously
  • Swim the breaststroke for 25 yards
  • Tread water for one minute using arms and legs
  • Swim on the back for 25 yards using elementary backstroke
  • Submerge and swim a distance of 10 feet under water.

Understanding the Junior Lifeguard Program

The next step introduces life-saving skills. This includes an interactive session that does not take place in the pool. An instructor discusses why it is important to understand these fundamental skills and a basic outline of the types of skills needed to be a lifeguard.

Discussion points include the following:

  • Understanding that a lifeguard job has a higher level of responsibility than most other jobs since one is responsible for the safety and well-being of other people
  • Problem-solving techniques in emergency and high-stress situations
  • Leadership-development strategies, as lifeguards are ranked first in line at the pool
  • Activities that encourage and foster teamwork
  • Communication techniques (both face-to-face and using non-verbal cues, such as hand signals).

The final step is to practice the lifeguard and life-saving skills. Participants are encouraged to utilize both the pool and the pool deck as platforms for rehearsing specific techniques.

Activities include the following:

  • Practicing different types of entries into the water using a lifeguard rescue tube or board
  • Active drowning-victim rescues vs. submerged-victim rescues
  • Utilizing tools to assist distressed swimmers
  • Analyzing what to look for in a swimmer who may need assistance
  • Front escape vs. rear escape
  • Submerged-brick retrieval required to pass the lifeguard test.

Swimmer’s Night Before Christmas!

Swimmers Night before Christmas!

By: Rose Beasley

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from all of us at Swan Aquatics Water Safety Services. We wanted to do something a little different this year.  Therefore, we came up with a version of  The Night Before Christmas that is for all the swimmers out there.  We hope you enjoy it and that you have a wonderful holiday weekend.

A Swimmer’s Night Before Christmas

Twas the swimmer’s night before Christmas and all in the pool

There were happy swimmers keeping active and cool.

Some did the backstroke and others the butterfly

Their technique was perfect, that no one could deny.

This was a special night because when the workout ends

They would join the annual Christmas party with family and friends.

Hearts began to pound excitedly as they all began to remember

all the fun times and memories made on this night last December

The night would include dancing and karaoke plus all kinds of fun games

Games like Dirty Santa for which they had all previously drawn names.

Chat involving the olympics will take place while eating a variety of treats

and many of the young athletes will confidently discuss their next swim meets

Just a few more laps left to go before the workout is complete

Then all the swimmers will exit the water and happily go eat

Swimming burns a lot of calories and builds up a big appetite

but their cravings will be settled at the big party tonight.

From fruit trays to fondue stations and from turkey to cheese platters

There will be something for everyone and that’s all that matters.

At last the workout has ended and the swimmers breathe a sigh of relief

Time for a visit from the man whose job at the North Pole is Chief

Some people may wonder why these athletes are swimming on Christmas Eve

However, a swimmer’s heart knows that the pool comes first and then you leave

As they laugh and high five while retrieving their gear, one looks back to say

“Don’t worry old pool, we’ll be back before the end of the year.”

Is it totally safe for kids to be in the hot tub or jacuzzi?

Hot Tub Safety for Kids

Is it totally safe for kids to be in the hot tub or jacuzzi?

By: Patricia Smith

The fact is kids are more sensitive to heat than adults. According to The American Academy of Pediatrics children 0-5 years old shouldn’t use a hot tub or jacuzzi. Kids can overheat, it’s too much for their delicate skin.

I was just on vacation in Phoenix Arizona and several kids were going from the swimming pool to the jacuzzi with parents following them.

104 degrees is too hot for babies and toddlers! Hot water up to their neck raises a child’s core temperature faster than if the water is only up to their waist or shoulders. It’s best to have tots sit halfway in the water on the top step or just their feet in.  When they are 5 years old and older, they can tolerate the heat better. 15 minutes max in a 98–102-degree jacuzzi. Plus, kids are usually wearing rash guards, arm floaties or swim diapers, the extra layers keep heat in…. they get hotter faster.

So, is it ok to say something to the adult allowing the 12-month-old tot in? I think so. Maybe they don’t know the risks. Yes, it’s fun to get everyone in the hot tub or jacuzzi together but, it’s really better for the kids if they don’t. Maybe it’s refreshment time at the jacuzzi, have the kids sit with their feet in the jacuzzi drinking a bottle of water or a juice box to rehydrate… that could work.

Pool rules are pool rules for your safety.

Always remember don’t leave children unattended in or near a hot tub or jacuzzi. Adjust the temperature so it’s suitable for children. Cover and lock the hot tub or jacuzzi when not in use. Lock the sliding door or have an alarm on the door.

The Week of Thanksgiving is Finally Here!

Happy Thanksgiving

The Week of Thanksgiving is Finally Here!

By: Rose Beasley

Mmmmmm….. just sitting here day dreaming about scrumptious mouthwatering turkey, home made pumpkin pie with whipped cream, and all of the fancy fixings that make Thanksgiving a delicious dream come true! Turkey Day is one of the most festive and loved holidays of the year. However, it can also be one of the most stressful days of the year for those hosting the happy get together.  Tradition does require being on your feet all day in a hot kitchen preparing every little bite from scratch. However, modern times, extended families and empty shelves at the grocery store can throw a monkey wrench into even the best laid plans.

While planning decadent desserts and side dishes to costar alongside the turkey is a beautiful tradition, it is important to remember that Thanksgiving is also about spending time with family and friends. This is why you can take a breather from being covered in flour and indulge in a feast from a local dining establishment. If you’re interested in Italian eats or all about American classics, you’ll be delightfully satisfied with options for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
