Exciting New Partnership with the NRPA

Swimming Swan becomes member of NRPA!

We are proud to announce a new partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and are very excited to be working with them. NRPA is a collaborator with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission for the Pool Safely program. Pool Safely is a national public education campaign designed to reduce child drownings and entrapments in swimming pools and spas.

NRPA is dedicated to providing resources to aquatics professionals operating swimming pools in every community. Like us, their mission is to provide education, networking, resources and certification to pool operators to ensure healthy, efficient, successful, and vibrant aquatic facilities. In addition to the Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certification program they offer, NRPA offers a wide variety of resources to certified pool operators and novices alike.

Their work does not end with aquatics. NRPA is the leading not-for-profit organization dedicated to building strong, healthy and resilient communities through the power of parks and recreation. NRPA advances this vision by investing in and championing the work of park and recreation professionals as a catalyst for positive change in service of equity, climate-readiness, and overall health and well-being.

NRPA’s network of more than 60,000 park and recreation professionals and advocates represents public spaces in urban communities, rural settings and everything in between. NRPA champions and supports the field of parks and recreation through professional development, advocacy, grants and programs, research, publications and more.

Every day, in communities across the country, the people of parks and recreation are providing essential services and confronting the most pressing issues of our time such as the following:

Swimmer’s Night Before Christmas!

Swimmers Night before Christmas!

By: Rose Beasley

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from all of us at Swan Aquatics Water Safety Services. We wanted to do something a little different this year.  Therefore, we came up with a version of  The Night Before Christmas that is for all the swimmers out there.  We hope you enjoy it and that you have a wonderful holiday weekend.

A Swimmer’s Night Before Christmas

Twas the swimmer’s night before Christmas and all in the pool

There were happy swimmers keeping active and cool.

Some did the backstroke and others the butterfly

Their technique was perfect, that no one could deny.

This was a special night because when the workout ends

They would join the annual Christmas party with family and friends.

Hearts began to pound excitedly as they all began to remember

all the fun times and memories made on this night last December

The night would include dancing and karaoke plus all kinds of fun games

Games like Dirty Santa for which they had all previously drawn names.

Chat involving the olympics will take place while eating a variety of treats

and many of the young athletes will confidently discuss their next swim meets

Just a few more laps left to go before the workout is complete

Then all the swimmers will exit the water and happily go eat

Swimming burns a lot of calories and builds up a big appetite

but their cravings will be settled at the big party tonight.

From fruit trays to fondue stations and from turkey to cheese platters

There will be something for everyone and that’s all that matters.

At last the workout has ended and the swimmers breathe a sigh of relief

Time for a visit from the man whose job at the North Pole is Chief

Some people may wonder why these athletes are swimming on Christmas Eve

However, a swimmer’s heart knows that the pool comes first and then you leave

As they laugh and high five while retrieving their gear, one looks back to say

“Don’t worry old pool, we’ll be back before the end of the year.”

Is it totally safe for kids to be in the hot tub or jacuzzi?

Hot Tub Safety for Kids

Is it totally safe for kids to be in the hot tub or jacuzzi?

By: Patricia Smith

The fact is kids are more sensitive to heat than adults. According to The American Academy of Pediatrics children 0-5 years old shouldn’t use a hot tub or jacuzzi. Kids can overheat, it’s too much for their delicate skin.

I was just on vacation in Phoenix Arizona and several kids were going from the swimming pool to the jacuzzi with parents following them.

104 degrees is too hot for babies and toddlers! Hot water up to their neck raises a child’s core temperature faster than if the water is only up to their waist or shoulders. It’s best to have tots sit halfway in the water on the top step or just their feet in.  When they are 5 years old and older, they can tolerate the heat better. 15 minutes max in a 98–102-degree jacuzzi. Plus, kids are usually wearing rash guards, arm floaties or swim diapers, the extra layers keep heat in…. they get hotter faster.

So, is it ok to say something to the adult allowing the 12-month-old tot in? I think so. Maybe they don’t know the risks. Yes, it’s fun to get everyone in the hot tub or jacuzzi together but, it’s really better for the kids if they don’t. Maybe it’s refreshment time at the jacuzzi, have the kids sit with their feet in the jacuzzi drinking a bottle of water or a juice box to rehydrate… that could work.

Pool rules are pool rules for your safety.

Always remember don’t leave children unattended in or near a hot tub or jacuzzi. Adjust the temperature so it’s suitable for children. Cover and lock the hot tub or jacuzzi when not in use. Lock the sliding door or have an alarm on the door.

Swimming and Breast Cancer

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Swimming and Breast Cancer

The month of October brings the colors of autumn, cooler temperatures, and the fun and games associated with Halloween.  However, October also brings an outpouring of the color pink because it is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Breast cancer is a disease in which cells in the breast grow out of control. There are different kinds of breast cancer. The kind of breast cancer depends on which cells in the breast turn into cancer. Breast cancer can begin in different parts of the breast. Breast cancer can occur in women and rarely in men. Other than skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women. Each year in the United States, about 255,000 women get breast cancer and 42,000 women die from the disease. Mammograms are the best way to find breast cancer early, when it is easier to treat and before it is big enough to feel or cause symptoms.Treatment depends on the stage of cancer. It may consist of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery.

Cancer and the treatments associated with it can cause massive exhaustion leading to bed rest and/or drastic reduction of physical activities as advised by doctors.  However, new evidence encouraging patients to exercise during and after their treatments continue to emerge as more studies focus on the quality of life and health benefits that can be achieved from continuing physical activity. Among the recommended activities is swimming!

The Effects of Swimming During and After Chemotherapy:

Swimming is an excellent source of aerobic activity that uses the resistance of the water for the swimmer to move through. Furthermore, horizontal posture of the swimmer results in moderately increased stroke volume, improved cardiac output, and lower heart rates. Also, because the swimmer is not fighting gravity, an increase in exercise-related blood pressure does not occur. Swimming can offer numerous cardiovascular benefits for the patient recovering from the debilitating effects of chemotherapy. Swimming provides an excellent means for the cancer patient to increase mitochondria, red blood cells, capillaries, and blood volume, resulting in an increase of oxygen delivery to the human organ systems. Improvements in energy and cardiovascular function are just some of the many benefits to regular swimming. It is important to note that because immune systems are also compromised, timing of the swim workouts is important. To swim when the pool is crowded, particularly during flu and cold season, may not be ideal. Choosing a time of day where fewer people are in the pool may be preferred.

The Effects of Swimming During and After Radiation:

Precaution to swimming: patients undergoing radiation should receive clearance from the radiology oncologist before initiating a swim program. Some patients experience skin irritation as a result of radiation treatments. The chlorinated water may exacerbate those problems. Also, radiation patients are restricted from exposure to the sun.  Protective clothing may be needed if using an outdoor pool. Also, if the oncology team allows the patient to swim, precautions to protect skin from sun and chemicals should be employed. Most radiation patients will probably choose to engage in light aerobics, instead of swimming, during radiation treatments for the reasons mentioned above.

The Effects of Swimming After Surgery:

With the mounting evidence that resistance training improves healing and range of motion (ROM), it still presents the question of  how does swimming fit into the equation of rehabilitation for the injured chest or arm muscles. The simple act of moving through the water provides a form of gentle stretch and resistance. During the freestyle stroke, the patient can initiate a controlled functional stretch. This action helps to strengthen and elongate the damaged muscles, which can help heal old injuries . Whether the patient is recovering from breast-altering surgery or lymph node removal, gentle stretch and resistance exercises help to improve strength, flexibility, and ROM . However, ALL post-surgical patients need to employ various modifications in their exercise programs.

In conclusion, there are still physical activities safe enough for current and recovering breast cancer patients to remain involved in.  However, every case is different and it is EXTREMELY important for all patients to check with their doctors before beginning or continuing any activity – including swimming! This weekend delivers the much anticipated Halloween and the end of October. As you are out celebrating with your family and friends amongst the colorful costumes and decor, be sure to notice the shades of pink before they are taken down.  October may be ending but the fight against Breast Cancer is only beginning.

Overcoming Aquaphobia

Fear of the Water

Overcoming Aquaphobia

The month of October is always focused on fear.  This is understandable because it is the time of the year when we celebrate Halloween.  The stores are full of costumes and candy, new horror flicks hit the movie theaters, and haunted houses and trails pop up all over town. Excitement over the thrill of being scared takes the community by storm as everyone eagerly anticipates the frightening surprises in store for them on the final night.

Being scared, in the right setting, can be a lot of fun.  There have even been a few scientific studies that suggest getting a good scare can even be a good stress reducer.  However, that is meant in a go visit a haunted trail with friends kind of way.  There are real things to be afraid of in this world that will only make life more stressful. In fact, there are many fears people face every day known as phobias.  These phobias are basic activities, places, and things that we all face on a daily basis.  Some of us find them normal while others become very distressed by them.  One such phobia is aqua- phobia.

You may have aqua-phobia if you find that any source of water causes you an excessive amount of anxiety. This can include a swimming pool, a lake, an ocean, or even a bathtub. Aqua phobia is often mistaken for another phobia called hydrophobia. Even though they both involve water, aqua phobia and hydrophobia aren’t the same.Hydrophobia is an aversion to water that develops in humans during the later stages of rabies

Drowning

Some of the more common symptoms of aqua-phobia include the following:

  • an immediate feeling of intense fear, anxiety, and panic when thinking about water
  • a persistent, excessive, or unreasonable fear when exposed to water
  • recognizing that the fear of water is excessive or out of proportion to the actual threat
  • avoidance of water
  • sweating
  • rapid heartbeat
  • tight chest and difficulty breathing
  • nausea
  • dizziness or fainting

While the causes of specific phobias aren’t well-understood,  there is some evidence that phobias can be genetically inherited. If you have a family member who has a mental health condition, such as anxiety or other phobias, you too may be at risk of developing a phobia.  Aqua-phobia is often caused by a traumatic event during childhood, such as a near-drowning. It can also be the result of a series of negative experiences. These typically happen in childhood and aren’t as severe as a traumatic experience. Science also suggests that changes in brain function may also play a role in developing specific phobias.

Entrance into the pool

Having a fear of water is no fun.  After all, there are so many fun and exciting ways to experience the world through water. Scuba diving, water skiing, fishing and of course – SWIMMING!!! Phobias can be hard to overcome but it can be done. To receive the right form of treatment, a licensed mental healthcare provider must evaluate the person’s symptoms and diagnose their specific phobia.

For more information on the subject you can visit sites like mayoclinic.com and medicalnewstoday.com .

The Importance of Understanding Beach Flags

Beach Flags and Water Safety

The Importance of Understanding Beach Flags

The beach is a beautiful but dangerously ever-changing environment. Although it can be fun for the whole family, it can also be unpredictable. This makes it very dangerous to people who are unaware of the hazards that can occur at times. This is why highly trained and educated lifeguards use a system of flags and signs to inform visitors of the important safety regulations they need to know.

The most important flags on the beach are the red and yellow flags. These show the supervised area of the beach and that a lifesaving service (life guards) is operating. However, it always pays to be sure before entering the water. If there are no red and yellow flags in sight it is still a good idea to check with the lifeguards about current water conditions.

Safety signs are put in place to warn you about the permanent and occasional hazards that are present in the environment. Some of these signs are permanent for long term hazards. However, others are put into place each day by the lifeguards to show you the current hazards present on that day in a specific location. These hazards include rip currents which can change locations on different days.

Another factor that is never completely predictable, despite meteorologists best efforts, is the weather. Frequent beach goers know that the weather can change in the blink of an eye. It is extremely important to stay in the know with what each flag means to ensure a safe beach day for you and your  family.

Beach Lifeguarding

The following example is an excellent way to better understand the flags and their meanings. Think of the flags like traffic lights. When a green flag is flying, conditions are calm, but swimmers should still exercise caution. Larger waves and rip currents are still possible.

Types of Beach Flags include:

A yellow flag means rough waves and moderate rip currents. While it implies conditions are not life-threatening, there is potential for dangerous undertow and swimmers should be cautious.

A purple flag is flown when dangerous marine life has been spotted. Dangerous marine life could mean anything from jellyfish to sharks and swimmers should use extreme caution keeping a close watch on their surroundings.

Red flags are the most serious, warning swimmers of high surf and strong currents. A red flag should not be taken lightly and swimmers should use extreme caution. Two red flags closes the beach to the public and swimming is prohibited.

If you don’t see a flag, that does not mean the water is safe. Swimmers should always be aware of their surroundings and stay alert while in the water. If you see a flag and are unsure of what it means, ask a lifeguard or look for a sign indicating the meaning.

Fall swimming fun for the whole family!

Fall Fun for the Whole Family!

Fall swimming fun for the whole family!

Did you know apples and pumpkins float? They float because they are less dense than the water. They  are buoyant. Some cities like Chandler, AZ offer fall pool activities. At the Mesquite Groves Aquatic  Center, they have The Pumpkin Dunk. It is a floating pumpkin patch where families can get in the heated  pool to search for their favorite pumpkins. Later there is a costume contest. Registration and fees are required. (It appears the event is full this year… ) But I say make your own fun! If you have a backyard  pool …plop some pumpkins and apples in the pool. Make it a fall activity for all.

With adult supervision let the kids swim and search for their own pumpkin. Then have a safe carving  area and decorate the pumpkins. Save the pumpkin seeds, clean them, and put on a cookie sheet, add  salt or cinnamon and sugar for a baked delicious treat. Make it a game as too who can find the most red  and green apples in the pool. Later clean, peel and slice the apples using kid safe utensils. Then everyone  can make an apple pie or apple crisp, to enjoy.

Remember the ABCs of Water Safety…

A=Always swim with Adult Supervision.

B=Barrier, have a fence around the pool with a self-latching lock.

C= Swim with Coast Guard approved life jacket, know CPR.

Just as their membership is diverse and their programs distinct, so are the children who participate in their camp experience. The mission of the American Camp Association is enriching the lives of children, youth and adults through the camp experience

As an organization we value the world, the people who live in it, and the contribution each individual can make. These are not separate values, but concentric circles. The values that are important to us as an organization are the same as those we strive to instill in the children we guide.

We believe that the camp experience is essential to every child’s growth and education. Through our membership in the ACA, we contribute by working together to promote and articulate our association as a leading authority in child development. We contribute to the lives of the children and adults who participate in our programs and to their families and our communities, and, in turn, we encourage them to contribute to those who are part of their lives and to the world in which they live.

We believe in all the children and adults who come to our camps. They are the reason we exist. Through positive child development and partnering with parents, we encourage children to value their uniqueness and to understand and appreciate their part in the larger community. We help children develop self-esteem, character, courage, responsibility, resourcefulness, and cooperation. Quality camp experiences help children develop the healthy emotional and social skills necessary to grow into strong, considerate, competent adults.

We believe that each of us plays an important role in the stewardship of our environment—both natural and manmade. We help children grow into committed, responsible citizens by teaching them to appreciate, respect, and care for the world in which they live.

A few services The Swimming Swan provides the ACA camp members are the following:

The Importance of School Teachers being First Aid and CPR Certified.

The importance of School Teachers being First Aid and CPR Certified.

Accidents happen. This is just a fact of life. However, accidents are much more likely to occur when children are involved. As a teacher you are never in a position to ignore it. Minor or major accidents can turn catastrophic when they are not dealt with immediately. It is during these times that lacking the knowledge and ability to help is not only frustrating but can mean the difference between life and death. That is why it is important for teachers to get basic first aid and CPR training.

There are a number of situations where basic first aid and CPR training are crucial. Heart attack, stroke, poisoning, severe bleeding, and cessation of breathing are some situations when a victim needs immediate attention to prevent severe complications or death. There are also situations where initial treatment is crucial to improve healing outcomes, like broken bones, frostbite, stings, bites, and burns. When it comes to medical emergencies, schools and universities are not immune to this kind of occurrence amongst staff or students. Teachers, professors and even other students can benefit hugely by knowing CPR. This is a very simple procedure and  can be administered during the most critical time when waiting for paramedics to arrive.  Also, it can help prevent brain damage that can occur due to a lack of oxygen flowing to the brain.

CPR Skills

During a first aid and CPR course, you are taught how to deal with these and numerous other situations effectively. Training courses will not only focus on first aid procedures, but also how to overcome inhibitors to helping in an emergency situation. A simple one-day CPR certification class covering adult, child CPR & AED & first aid could make all the difference in an emergency.

The importance of teachers obtaining CPR and First Aid certifications cannot be emphasized enough. We live in an uncertain world and healthcare professionals cannot be everywhere at once. Always remember that knowledge is power. Accidents are not on the calendar for you to be ready for. Otherwise they would be tasks. Having the right knowledge on how to handle accidents when they do occur is a very empowering feeling.  Don’t rely on others to act and definitely don’t put off training until it is too late.

Children at School

At Swan Aquatics Water Safety Services we provide private classes for 6 to 10 students where we go to schools to certify teachers in CPR and First Aid. To learn more and to sign up just click on Red Cross CPR Classes in the box below.

Keep Swimming in the Autumn Months!

fall/autumn leaves

Keep Swimming in the Autumn Months!

The long hot summer has come to a close and in its place are the colorful and cooler days of autumn.  During this time families tend to place swim lessons on the back burner and focus more on the seasonal activities associated with fall like football, cheer leading, and homework. However, swimming isn’t just a great way to beat the heat in the summer time. Swimming in autumn, winter and spring are important to retain the skill and give the full body a healthy workout. This also contributes to a healthy mental focus as well because it aids in reducing stress and lethargy.  Apart from these great perks, there are four additional ones to consider.

1. Pool & Water Safety

Young swimmers who take a break during the fall and winter months not only lose the basic swimming skills they built over the summer, but crucial water and safety skills too. Practice makes perfect and these skills can only be reinforced through repetition in order to stay in a child’s long-term memory. In the event of being faced with a dangerous or even life-threatening situation, it is more likely for a child who has stopped lessons to forget what to do. Drowning is not a seasonal tragedy. It can happen any time regardless of what the temperature is outside.

2. Skill Retention & Progression

In order for students to retain swimming skills and progress further to more advanced skills, they must practice as often as possible. Just remember the following, “if you don’t use it, you lose it.” For young swimmers, a long time away from the pool between summers can mean taking a big step backward in their development and swimming technique. In other words, don’t make them start back at the beginning again after they are a year older.

3. Healthy Active Bodies

A common misconception about swimming in the colder months is that the combination of water and cold weather can bring cold, flus, and infections. The truth is that children who spend the fall and winter months swimming are not susceptible to more illnesses. An indoor or outdoor heated pool can help keep a swimmers’ natural defenses against infections strong. In fact, research has shown that physical activity such as swimming can keep lungs clear of mucus, reducing any proneness to respiratory issues. Additionally, swimming can increase appetite, and improve sleep patterns.  Both can help strengthen a child’s immunities to fight against winter illnesses.

4. Healthy Minds

Last but not least, swimming is good for keeping minds healthy. Swimming can increase mood, brain development and provide a social outlet for children during the winter months, a time when opportunities for recreation, sport and socialization are reduced.  According to a Griffith Institute study, swimming all year long not only helps children build up their swimming and water safety skills, but accelerates the development of visual-motor skills, verbal and cognitive skills. This includes vital skills such as memorization, focus, and problem solving. The study concluded that language development, confidence, physical development were all achieved sooner in swimming children.

In conclusion, fall is a great time for swimming.  Winter and spring are too! So as the days become shorter and temperatures begin to drop, remember to keep the swim suit nearby and take a dip whenever possible.

Private Lifeguard Services at Lake Havasu, Arizona.

Private Lifeguard Services at Lake Havasu, AZ!

Traveling lifeguards are not just something you see in the movies. How do we know?  We know because we have a team of lifeguards who travel to special water related events to make sure everyone stays safe. One such event was the recent Lake Brownies and Lemonade Weekend at Lake Havasu. The event was hosted by Pollen, a global marketplace for the best experiences in the world.  The event was three days and two nights of hotel takeovers, beach parties and concerts with special guests. It was our team’s first time working with Pollen and the event was a huge success!

Although the event was fun and exciting, we want to point out how important having a team of lifeguards at the event really was.  Things can go from fun to frantic very quickly when a lot of people are gathered together at an event.  This goes double for events where pools, lakes, rivers, or any body of water is present. Relying solely on other attendees to keep a careful watch on the people around them is a disaster waiting to take place.  On the other hand, lifeguards are specially trained professionals who have the skills to spot and rescue someone who is drowning. The average person doesn’t have the reaction time and skills to recognize when someone is in trouble.

This is why lifeguard services are so important. In the event that someone is in danger or engaging in dangerous activities, the lifeguard has a whistle to alert those involved. In worst cases, lifeguards alert co-workers and emergency rescue when someone is seriously injured or goes under water. Also, lifeguards are not only excellent swimmers, they are also trained in emergency rescue procedures, including CPR. Our team practices preventative lifeguarding measures to minimize risk before it happens. If you’re hosting a private event around a swimming pool, its always best practice to have a lifeguard on deck. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) services are available in select areas.

Children’s pool parties and school swim lessons are commonplace for them to work. These types of situations definitely require assistance as children can get into trouble in the blink of an eye. They can easily swim to a depth that’s too much for them and a quick-thinking lifeguard is a necessity. They also work in sports and health clubs. No matter how experienced you are at swimming, accidents can happen and a lifeguard should always be present. Generally, you’ll find most places have 1 lifeguard per twenty swimmers. If it’s children’s swim lessons or a party, this is usually fifteen children to one lifeguard.Drowning happens without a sound.

Our lifeguard management services are available for any homeowners association, community or municipality that needs seasonal or year-round services. From the initial on-site visit, our Aquatic Facility Operators (AFO) and/or Certified Pool Operators (CPO) are reviewing all documentation, equipment, zone coverages and more to provide leading industry, professional services. Drowning happens without a sound. This is why it is often referred to as the silent killer. Renting a lifeguard for your event takes the stress off of party hosts and provides peace of mind to everyone attending! Let us know how we can help you today.

Experience the Rush of Circus Circus Hotel & Resort in Fabulous Las Vegas

Swimming Swan partners with Circus Circus in providing Lifeguard Services

We are always looking to partner with new businesses and this time we hit the “big top” with Circus Circus Hotel and Resort in Las Vegas Nevada. Don’t be fooled by the design appearance or name. Designed by Rissman and Rissman Associates and opened in 1968, Circus Circus may look like a great place for families to clown around but it was intended for adults. After all, in 1968 Las Vegas was obsessed with making sure that everything in the city was theme oriented. From the exotic pyramids of Egypt to the marvelous Caesar’s Palace of Rome, taking a trip to Vegas was like stepping into a different time period.

However, times did change and an increase in demand for family friendly entertainment led Circus Circus to become one of the first casino properties to make attracting families its primary objective.  In 1993, Adventuredome, an indoor amusement park,   opened and has expanded since then with dozens of rides and roller coasters.  During Halloween season, its Fright Dome is one of Vegas’s most popular haunted houses. Other attractions include free clown shows, an arcade, a virtual reality room, an FX 4D theater, Angry Birds The Ride, and so much more.  It really is a fabulous wonderland for families to enjoy and make memories that will last a life time.  Also, special mention here for the super cool experience of Neon Nights where you can get your glow on after dark every Friday and Saturday night. Imagine  5 acres of glowing indoor fun as the Adventuredome takes on a whole new vibe with neon inspired rides, attractions and Midway Games.

Amusement Parks are awesome but we favor a more aquatic attraction known as the Splash Zone! Over an acre of fun at Circus Circus Las Vegas Splash Zone. Swimming pools, whirlpools, water playground and a 50 ft slide tower!  Circus Circus’ newly expanded pool experience features a 50′ waterslide tower with three exciting slides, Splash Pad – an all ages water playground with waterfalls and splash buckets, plus Splash Snacks food truck and Cabanas for rent. The Splash Zone features three slides including a 50 foot slide tower. Need something a little less exciting? Splash and play all day with water cannons, spill buckets, rain trees and more at the Splash Pad.  However, be prepared to get totally drenched before the day is over.  If taking a swim or just cooling off in the water is your goal, they’ve got you covered. There are two large and refreshing pools and whirlpools to enjoy. Access to Splash Zone Slide and Pool Complex is exclusive to Circus Circus – Las Vegas’ current registered hotel guests

Circus Circus has made memorable cameo appearances in films like James Bond: Diamonds Are Forever, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery and Honey, I Blew Up the Kid several decades later. But its most famous appearance is perhaps Hunter S Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, where it sends Thompson and his attorney into a tailspin “nobody can handle the possibility that any freak with $1.98 can walk into the Circus-Circus and suddenly appear in the sky over downtown Las Vegas while boldly announcing any thoughts he has.”  Talk about fun pop culture trivia questions for game night!

Circus Circus is definitely the place to be for a unique vacation experience to dull all others.  We are proud to have partnered with this amazing establishment and look forward to having our lifeguards watching over everyone. Visit circuscircus.com learn more and book your next vacation. Also, take a look at the interesting time chart below to see high points of the hotel’s history.

A Swimming Star is Born: Caeleb Dressel

A Swimming Star is Born: Caeleb Dressel

USA dominated the sports of swimming and track and field, in which U.S. athletes won 11 and seven gold medals, respectively. Star athlete Caeleb Dressel led the way among individual American gold medal winners with five gold medals in total in the swimming events.

Born August 16, 1996 and from Green Cove Springs, Florida,  Caeleb Remel Dressel is an American swimmer who specializes in the freestyle and butterfly sprint events. Dressel currently represents the Cali Condors which is part of the International Swimming League.

Swimming with the strokes of a champion, Dressel set an Olympic record in the semifinals in Tokyo and shaved 0.03 more off that time to set the new world record in the final. It’s the first world record for an American swimmer in Tokyo, and only the second individual world record set at this Olympics. Not too shabby!

Dressel now owns the five fastest times in the event. That’s no small feat given that the record he broke in 2019 belonged to Phelps, who was the first to break the 50-second barrier at the world championships in 2009, which Phelps swam in a type of fast suit that is no longer allowed in competition. Dressel’s time placed him in the company of other great American champions in the event, from Phelps to Ian Crocker, Pablo Morales and Mark Spitz, each of whom contributed to faster and faster races that set the stage for Dressel’s impressive time.

The 24 year old athlete may have made it look easy but says it was definitely not. After all, he participated in a total of 12 swims. That much activity can burn out even the best swimmers. “I can be proud of every swim, every effort I put in the water, every mental approach to every single race,” Dressel says. “I was nervous before races. Every race was not perfect. … Every morning when I woke up the first words weren’t always, ‘Oh, I’m so excited.’ Sometimes it was, ‘Oh f***, this is going to suck today.’ Sorry, just trying to be honest with you guys. In spite of a smidge of imperfection, Dressel went on to say “But just because it’s bad doesn’t mean it’s not worth it.”

Results don’t lie and Dressel’s final results were truly phenomenal with five gold medals, two world records, two more Olympic records, and a seat next to Michael Phelps and Mark Spitz as just the third American male swimmer to win three individual golds in a single Summer Games. As Dressel is now literally the world’s greatest swimmer, it can definitely be said that whatever he is doing is working and he should just keep doing it.

The only thing lacking from making Dressel’s Tokyo Olympic experience absolutely perfect was s a sixth gold medal. Sadly, his bid to win a sixth gold medal fell apart with another U.S. relay debacle. Apparently, Team USA was just too far behind in the 4×100-meter mixed medley when their top swimmer took over. In the end, the best Dressel could do was rally the U.S. to a fifth-place finish in an event that features two men and two women on each team. “Fifth place is unacceptable for USA Swimming,” Dressel said. “It stings.”

In spite of that loss, nothing can take away his impressive victories or world records.  It will be amazing to see what happens in the 2024 olympics in Paris.
